    Happy 4th of July

“Every child in America should be acquainted with his own country. He should read books that furnish him with ideas that will be useful to him in life and practice. As soon as he opens his lips, he should rehearse the history of his own country.” Noah Webster, On the Education of Youth in America, 1788   HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!

    Bookstore Bars

*Sitting in the Stacks is well aware today is not Friday, but decided to post a day early as many people will be out celebrating the 4th of July with their friends and family tomorrow.  Beer, wine, whiskey — they all pair well with books! Who among us hasn’t enjoyed a nice beverage while curled up with our latest read? It appears this beloved ritual of many book lovers won’t have to remain within the confines of a home.

Falling Books – A Book Fountain

What book lover wouldn’t want this book fountain? This photo was shared with me by some readers. It is the fountain outside the Cincinnati Public Library.   Thanks for the photo! Do you have a book related finding you want to share on Sitting on the Stacks? Submit the request here.

Curated Shelves and the Sex Appeal of Books

In the past, I have bemoaned the mounting popularity of the e-reader only to admit that the rising price of books, cost of printing and the long required reading lists for school pushed me to begin using an iPad. I walked around in shame that, as a self-identified bibliophile, I used an e-reader. Nothing made me happier than buying a new (tangible)  book, throwing it in my purse and reading it out in the world. I never viewed this as a bragging act or an attempt to gain certain status in the eyes of others, but Mireille Silcoff’s article for the the New York Times Magazine has me wondering about my intentions.

    Book Buying Logic

Are you a book lover? Do you debate with yourself about whether you should/can buy a new book? Have you ever really wanted to just browse in a bookstore, but then realized browsing equates buying for you? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you must use the reasoning in this picture!     Thanks to my dad for finding this picture!

    Book Trauma

My sister sent me this picture the other day. I thought the book lovers on Sitting in the Stacks could relate. This photo is also timely, since I recently finished a book and am in the process of finishing the review. So, standby for a review of Confederacy of Dunces! What book left you feeling like the little guy in the photo? What book were you the saddest to finish? Was there a book that actually traumatized you?

Wisdom to a Book Lover from Book Lovers

This week I visited the Chicago Cultural Center. At one point it was the public library and this history is evident in the decor. On the second floor by the Tiffany dome, these quotations from famous authors about books were engraved. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
