by Jason Fagone

I experienced this book as an audio book. I don’t recommend it, because so much of this book is about the codes and cryptographic puzzles which are printed in the actual book. A PDF accompanies the audio book, but it’s not an easy experience if you’re listening on the go.

Fagone recounts the life of Elizabeth Friedman who was one of the founders of US cryptology. Her work aided in defeating the Nazis in South America and led to the founding of the NSA. She’s often overlooked for her husband.

This was a compelling story. I love celebrating women’s accomplishments and bringing women from the past to light. However, I wasn’t sucked into the story. There were interesting parts that made me want to continue listening, but mostly I felt EH about it.

Before you write this book off....let me say I do not enjoy audio books unless I’m on a road trip. My feelings about this could 100% be due to how I listened.

Recommend to: πŸ€“πŸ§‘πŸ½β€πŸ«πŸ‘©πŸΏβ€πŸ’»πŸ“»

I’d recommend this book to those who are giant nerds! Do you like history? Do you like puzzles? This book is for you (if you read the physical copy and can see the codes). I think this book could also be interesting to those who work with computers, because there’s an algorithm sub-plot.

I always love when a book comes in the mail, but it’s extra special when you’re celebrating a friend’s badass accomplishment. I want to sit down and read it now, but I have to work on my dissertation. Maybe one day my dissertation will be an awesome book like Samira’s (@samiracle04).
Hi friends...πŸ‘‹πŸΌ Let’s talk about depressi Hi friends...πŸ‘‹πŸΌ

Let’s talk about depression. I wrote this poem waiting for the bus the year my dad was diagnosed with leukemia and I was awaiting hip surgery. Everything felt crappy.

Fast forward to now. My hip is acting up again (it hurts to walk today). Things feel crappy. The world is on πŸ”₯ (soon to be literally if you live in the US West).

Obviously that’s an understatement and a hyperbole, but words aren’t my forte when depression hits. If you’re like me and have a hard time communicating during depressive or anxiety, I recommend @realdepressionproject . They have some helpful guides to share with friends and family. Their posts have found ways to explain things that I used to struggle to say.

This isn’t a sponsored post at all!

Just felt sad and hurting today and wanted to share a resource I’ve enjoyed. I love to connect people and be a resource when I can.

πŸ’œπŸ’œ to you all! Care for yourself & remember that feeling anger, frustration, anxiety, sadness, joy, etc. is you being human. Patience and grace to yourself (something I’m still learning).

Birthday edition πŸŽ‚

Today is my birthday and I wanted to take a stab at coming up with a birthday themed challenge.

This stack challenge is for books that have some relation to the season you were born in.

My books remind me of spring or have key parts that take place during spring.

Your books could be set in a season, have the season in the name, or you always read the book in the season/it makes you think of the season.

π™²πš˜πš—πšœπš’πšπšŽπš› πš’πš˜πšžπš›πšœπšŽπš•πš 𝚝𝚊𝚐𝚐𝚎𝚍 πš’πš 𝚒𝚘𝚞 𝚜𝚎𝚎 πšπš‘πš’πšœ!

1. Name the season you were born in (Spring, Fall, Summer, Winter)
2. Select at least 5 books connected to that season some how.
3. Give it a birthday feel with candles, cakes, bows, etc.
4. Tag more people and me @sittinginthestacks
5. Share with your friends!!

Thanks for celebrating with me this way!

----------

* No One Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July

I can’t explaon why, but this book to me is one that needs to be read as the seasons change.

* Lamb by Christopher Moore

Obviously this book should be read in the spring...ahem Easter.

* Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Again, I think spring for this book. There are some good scenes that take place during spring. Maybe I first read it during middle school in the spring. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

* Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

No clue....I like Norse Mythology and needed another book.

* Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri

I first read this during the spring ages ago. Maybe there’s something about collections of short stories that make me think spring.

It’s National poetry month & I don’t post enough about writing here. I thought I’d share some of the poems I’ve written. I really like pairing poems with photos I’ve taken.

This poem seems to echo extra true these days as we hope to see the end of COVID & begin to think dreams of seeing friends and family can come true.

That cat is Misty. She was my first cat and I adopted her when I was in middle school. She passed away in 2017 after living with me in Michigan, Chicago, D.C, and Boulder. I always liked to think she was dreaming when she stood on her hind legs looking out the window.

This passage really resonated with me:

I also wanted to sneak in a peak at the purple I now have in my hair.

April is Poetry Month! And.... Friends!!! I got my April is Poetry Month! And....
Friends!!! I got my first vaccine!

I’m double posting today because this was supposed to be yesterday’s content, but by the time I got home from the pharmacy I was worn out.

Add on that I only have 40 days to finish my dissertationβ€”I’m stressed and worn out.

Ok so what’s this post about now that I’ve rambled? POETRY!

I was going to dive into other novels this month, but I’ve changed my mind. April’s reads will all be poetry books (and Minor Feelings which is the next book club read).

I’m not a TBR list maker and I’ve wanted to do a feel about it, but.....see above ☝️. But I have a pile of poetry books I’ve been wanting to read for years AND I believe these books will help me with the creative and self-reflective portion of my dissertation.

How are you celebrating poetry month?

Mismatched Titles

This was a hard one for me and I’m not even sure if I fully agree with the books I’ve selected. We were supposed to pick books whose titles do not connect to actually plot/topic of the book.

1. Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler

This book is about the purges and show trials that took place in the USSR. The book is a novel and never mentions the USSR by name.

2. A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

This book πŸ™„. I was not a fan when I read it. This is one of my selections I’m not sure it’s too mismatched with its title. Thoughts?

3. Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

I haven’t read this since high school, but most of Vonnegut’s book would be a good pick for this meme.

4. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Ok I’m not sure about this selection either and that’s because I can’t recall if there was some passing reference to clockwork orange in the story that connects to the plot. I read this about 8 years ago and then blocked it from my memory.

5. Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee

I can make a poetic argument for this title and how it matches to the story of the Scopes Trial.
.
.
.
See how I struggled this week with the top 5!

What do you think of these selections?

by Austin Channing Brown

This book!! Oh man β€” Brown has written a compelling memoir that keeps you turning the page until the very end. The stories Brown tells about her experiences as Black in a White world offer a personal insight into the daily manifestations of systemic issues.

I’m not usually a big memoir reader, but this book has me reconsidering the genre.

Recommend to: πŸ’πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ’πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ’πŸΌβ€β™€οΈβœοΈ

Ok my emoji game for the population I recommend read this book is eh....butβ€”

White women!! Christians! This is a book to be read! Brown situates her experiences within the church and addresses the intersection of race and Christianity. Also, white womenβ€”let’s get our shit together and learn how to be true allies and not β€œwell intentioned” micro-aggression machines.

Obviously everyone should read this book. It left me reflecting and questioning words, acts, etc I’ve done in the past that seemed innocent to me but were expressions of white privilege. It’s not that the concept is new to me, but Brown’s book further rooted the manifestations of it in daily life and small acts.

The quotation in the second image was my favorite! It may seem strange that this line stood out to me in a book full of powerful anecdotes, but I want EVERYONE β€œto be suspicious of the language of America.” A big part of my dissertation is questioning the narratives told about the U.S. and who is and isn’t American. Soβ€”my nerdy heart leapt when I read this sentence and I was in love.

Also, Brown is from the Midwest so....MIDWEST LOVE!

Today would’ve been my dad’s 75th birthday, but he passed away a year and a half ago.

My dad was my best friend. He instilled in me my love of books and history. He actually came up with the name for the book blog. He commented on almost every post I made on the blog. He even wrote a couple posts himself.

𝑆𝑖𝑑𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑖𝑛 π‘‘β„Žπ‘’ π‘†π‘‘π‘Žπ‘π‘˜π‘  would not exist without my dad.

I’d sometimes have random books delivered to my house with no note and have to call him asking if he sent it. It usually was him.

To celebrate his birthday I did a couple stacks. These are all books that were his, remind me of him, or he gave me (let’s be honest most of my book collection he gave me as gifts).

These books show his:
- love of history (he loved biographies),
- appreciation for his home (Detroit),
- passion for languages (he was fluent in German - we actually spoke in German each night up until the last week of his life),
- and his interest in economics/concern for me to learn about investing.

My dad also loved photography and that photo in the background is one of his.

To the pilot, the historian, the photographer, and the best dad everβ€”Happy Birthday wherever you are! πŸ’œπŸ§‘

The Knife of Never Letting Go
By Patrick Ness

This book is the first in the Chaos Walking trilogy. It’s also a movie in theaters right now. I discovers this series cuz of the film (haven’t seen it) after I enjoyed Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. He plays the main character in the film adaptation.

This story takes place on another planet where men’s thoughts can be heard and seen. It’s a journey tale as the two main characters travel across the planet to Haven.

Oh man β€” it was an emotional rollercoaster. Seriously, I actually made audible sounds at certain points in the book and I’m usually a quiet reader.

Recommend to: πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš€πŸ«€πŸ§

I recommend this book to anyone who is into exploration, has a big heart that connects with characters easily, and is ready to be curious about the store beneath the story.

This book is marketed for ages 14+ according to Amazon. I can see it as a YA book cuz of the ages of the main characters, but there were parts that were hard for even me to read. Granted I read A LOT of books as a kid that I probably shouldn’t have.

So I’ll say this...the book should come with a TW for sexual assault. There isn’t anything explicitly portrayed but there are suggestive moments, implied thoughts, and sexually aggressive language which is harmful and can be triggering.

I am looking forward to reading book 2 of the trilogy!

First,
Designing Your Life
Leaving Academia
These books are because once I graduate with my PhD this summer I am going to be leaving the academy. My brain is working to reconcile this reality and where I want to go next.

Second,
White Evangelical Racism
This is actually a review copy I received. But this book highlights where my academic brain exists. Religion, politics, and media are my specialty. But these three topics can’t be examined without also looking at race.

Third,
The Knife of Never Letting Go
This is my escapism book. Most of the books I’m currently reading are all non-fiction and deal with racism, sexism, or my dissertation. I need a fiction world to escape into. Also, I recently watched the new Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland and he’s in a new movie based on this book.

I also LOVE sunflowers.🌻 My mom sent me this card as encouragement for my dissertation. It sits on my desk. It feels like everyone needs the hope of sunflowers these days. Also, the second photo is of sunflower seedlings beginning to sprout!

I’m not a big #bookhaul post person. Why? I don’t know. It just feels weird to me. But here I am posting my first one.

First upβ€”π™Ήπš˜πš‘πš— 𝙹. π™Ίπš’πš—πšβ€™πšœ in Detroit, MI @johnkingbooksdetroit

I 𝐿𝑂𝑉𝐸 this bookstore. My dad first took me when I was in high school and it’s a necessary stop when I go home and am in the area.

Their downtown Detroit store has 4 floors!! The store has existed since 1965, but the BIG warehouse location opened in 1983.

You will find over a million books between the two store locations. And in the main store there are also records, comics, VHS tapes, and so much other media that will lure you in to peruse for hours.

I cannot tell you how awesome this store is! I’ve spent HOURS here and you can lost among the books. Now that is a book lover’s dream....

The store also deals in rare books, but you have to reach out to get connected to those.

The photos in this post were taken by my father on my first visit to the store.

Do you have a bookstore you absolutely love?

Book Review πŸ“–πŸ“ The Splendid and The Vile By Book Review πŸ“–πŸ“

The Splendid and The Vile
By Erik Larson

My favorite part of this books was how much personal information was included. This book does not provide the usual biographical look at Churchill. Instead you get to learn about him through other people’s eyes and read about the love, politics, loss, and daily life of everyone else.

This book was a personal read for me cuz it made me feel closer to my dad who passed away.

The Splendid and The Vile is an intimate look at Winston Churchill, his inner circle, and relations with the U.S. during the London Blitz of 1940-1941. It takes you through the personal and political of World War II using archival materials and a narrative style that has you rooting for England even though you already know the outcome. Larson strikes again as a historical storyteller that weaves together diaries, governmental documents, and personal correspondence to humanize stories learned through history.

What do all those emojis mean! They mean I recommend this book to readers who are history nerds, have a keen interest in UK history, or have read Larson’s other books. This is a book right up my alley and I’d use all those emojis to describe myself or my interests.
